Executive Director, Rev. Charlie Thompson started Freedom Ministries just a few years ago. The Lord gave Charlie a vision of thousands of drug addicts giving their hearts to Christ and transforming their lives. He began his mission alone ministering to people on the streets of Newark, referring and transporting them to substance abuse treatment facilities. Several years later, Freedom Ministries was born. We have recently acquired new, larger office space at 989 South Orange Avenue in Newark, New Jersey and have expanded our services to improve quality of life and to better serve the community.
Freedom Ministries Worldwide is a Newark based, non-profit community center and ministry providing substance abuse treatment referrals, food, clothing, and individual and group counseling to those in need. Over the past year we have transported approximately one thousand men and women to substance abuse treatment.
Currently, Freedom Ministries is affiliated with several detoxification and rehabilitation programs in the metropolitan area. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:30am many who are sick and tired of being sick and tired meet us at our location. Once they make the decision to change their lives, they meet with the staff at Freedom Ministries and are well on their way to turning their lives around. For those that complete the long-term rehab programs, the transformed life is nothing short of a miracle.
More recently Freedom Ministries started a food and clothing pantry, which is open to the public every Wednesday from 4-5:30pm and Saturday from 8-10pm. We are feeding and clothing hundreds of families each month. In addition, we have a strong outreach program with Newark Penn Station’s homeless community, providing approximately 1,300 meals per month and referring many to much needed shelter, mental health care, and substance abuse treatment. Freedom Ministries is actively making a difference in the urban communities of Newark and helping to bring change and stability to the lives of countless individuals and families.
