A Basket of Hope
“Who is my neighbor?” was the question asked of Jesus by a certain lawyer who was trying to test Him (Luke 10:29). Out of the three examples Jesus gave in the scriptures, the neighbor was the one that a total stranger showed mercy to. Jesus told the lawyer to go and do the same.
Throughout scripture God reveals His sensitivity toward widows and orphans and the disadvantaged. His command is that we look after and take care of them. He hears their cries and is not kind to anyone who mistreats or rejects them. (Ex. 22:22-24; Mat. 25:41-46)
It was in the heart of the stranger to help someone in need. God is not fooled by our selfish acts for recognition. He sees and knows the hidden motives of our hearts. He sees what we do when we’re alone – how we may cross the street or roll up our car window to avoid helping someone. He knows our thoughts toward the have-nots.
A Basket of Hope for the homeless and hungry is a ministry that we believe touches the heart of God in a special way. Through our feeding program, not only are approximately 1300 meals being provided each month to Newark’s Penn Station homeless community but many have been referred to local shelters, public assistance programs, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment. Whatever is needed to help move a person from where they are to more stable living is the foundation of what Freedom Ministries is all about.
Each morning, Monday through Friday, our outreach worker and Director of the program, Evangelist Mary Charles, and her team meet at Penn Station in downtown Newark. There is usually a line already formed and waiting for their arrival. God sends between 70 and 85 people a day to their line and the numbers keep growing. They receive a sandwich, a drink, and a box of cookies or a cake. They also get a message of inspiration from God’s Word before they’re fed. “It’s an absolutely awesome thing to see what God is doing in the lives of so many that society has shunned. Over half of the group bows and surrenders their heart to Christ every morning, right under the heavens as God looks down and smiles,” says Evangelist Charles.
It’s because of His mercy, His grace, and His love that ‘A Basket of Hope’ is feeding the homeless and hungry and changing lives.
To Him alone be the glory for what He has done and continues to do!
GOD IS truly AWESOME!
